Individual Counseling
There are some times in our lives when we feel like we are stuck and don't have a clue as to what we should do. Sometimes we seek someone to talk to but we also don't believe that there isn't anyone around us who can listen to us with an objective ear and without judgement. During this time, we may think of obtaining individual counseling.
In individual counseling, a counselor/therapist works with the client closely and helps them deal with their emotional, psychological, and behavioral issues together. This one-on-one work focuses specifically on the problems that the client brings to therapy/counseling. Sessions last approximately 50 minutes but can be extended if needed.
In individual counseling, many different therapeutic modalities are used. For example cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on the connection on how our thought impact our thoughts and emotions. Other therapy modalities may include dialectical behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, or solution focused brief therapy. While in some situations a particular therapeutic modality may appear to be appropriate, in other situations, that same modality may be ineffective or unsuitable. For this reason, the appropriate therapeutic modality and techniques used must suit the person's circumstances and needs.
So when should individual counseling/therapy be sought out?
Counseling/therapy can be sought out in a variety of situations; however, if you are experiencing the following or similar situations, as listed below, you might benefit from consulting an expert.
* If you feel overwhelmed, not able to cope with everyday life or 'just don't feel like yourself' these days;
* If you are experiencing feelings like anger and irritation and are having difficulty controlling them;
* If you are feeling depressed, anxious, or experiencing stress related psychological issues;
* If you feel like you are stuck in a relationship and can't get out or feel like you are in an unhealthy relationship where you are experiencing a variety of abuses (emotional, financial, physical, social, etc.) or have difficulty trusting others;
* If you have recently lossed a loved one or a close friend that was important to you;
* If you have experienced a traumatic event;
Then you may need to obtain individual counseling/therapy.
So how does this counseling process work?
Starting from you first meeting, your therapist/counselor will ask you some questions about your past and current situation and try to understand why you have sought out counseling, what you expect from counseling, and assess how comfortable you are in sharing personal information. While this information helps the therapist/counselor to get to know you better, it will also help clarify how the therapist/counselor will be able to help you. After acquiring an understanding of your personal needs, your counselor/therapist will discuss the best treatment options available to you for your situation. Here, it is extremely important that you work together with your therapist as this directly impacts and shapes the counseling process and therapy outcomes.
During counseling, your therapist/counselor may ask you questions associated with how you are feeling, either good or bad. You can and should discuss this progress between sessions, as well as what happens between your sessions - especially if you experienced something that was difficult - to ensure that you can better manage a similar situation in the future. The goal of your therapist/counselor is to provide the support you need. Your therapist/counselor will not 'solve' your problems or give you 'ideas' on how to solve them. On the contrary, your therapist/counselor is there to offer you the support you need while helping you develop new coping strategies and increase and strengthen your psychological resilience against life's difficulties.
In short, at Triquetra Counseling Center, personalized approaches based on the client's needs are used. It does not matter why you came to the center because our goal during this process is to help you reach your therapeutic goals and help you develop and increase your overall well-being.
